Starlink V3 constellation starts being deployed this month. Ultimately, it will deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of our current 11,000 satellite constellation.
Starship's upcoming 14th test flight will deliver 26 Starlink V3 satellites to orbit for the first time. Each Starlink V3 satellite will add 1 Tbps of capacity to the constellation, for a total of 26 Tbps of capacity added on this mission alone. That’s ~10x the capacity compared to a single launch of V2 mini Starlink satellites on Falcon 9. After deploying from Starship, the Starlink V3 satellites will unfold their antennas and deploy their solar arrays and make initial contact with the ground and the rest of the Starlink constellation via radio frequency and laser links. The satellites will then begin raising their orbits with their onboard thrusters. Following their on-orbit checkouts, the satellites should begin serving customers as soon as a few weeks after launch! Three of the satellites have been modified with a suite of cameras to scan Starship’s heatshield and transmit imagery down to operators to continue testing methods of analyzing Starship’s heatshield readiness for return to launch site on future missions.

SpaceX is currently targeting Starship Flight 14 for September 22 🚀 And this flight is a huge step beyond everything Starship has done so far Flight 14 will attempt to: • Reach stable Low Earth Orbit for the first time • Deploy production Starlink V3 satellites into orbit • Become Starship’s first revenue-generating mission • Attempt the full orbital mission profile from launch → deployment → deorbit → reentry • Push the V3 heat shield through another major test • Continue proving Raptor 3, guidance, landing burns and vehicle control needed for rapid reuse The hardware: • Super Heavy Booster 21 • Starship Ship 41 • Third flight of the Starship V3 architecture • 33 Raptor 3 engines on Super Heavy • 6 Raptor engines on Starship • Launching from Pad 2 at Starbase After liftoff, Super Heavy will separate from Starship, perform its boostback and return for a controlled ocean splashdown No tower catch is planned for Flight 14 The really big part happens with Ship 41 Instead of following another suborbital trajectory, Starship will continue into orbit Then it will deploy production Starlink V3 satellites into stable LEO That is a massive milestone by itself Flight 13 proved Starship could deploy V3 satellites in space....Flight 14 is the first time Starship is expected to actually leave production V3 satellites in orbit And these satellites are monsters Each Starlink V3 is designed for: • 1 Tbps of downlink capacity • 160 Gbps of uplink capacity • 2,048 beams in each direction • Six 400 Gbps laser links Eventually a single Starship will be able to carry up to 60 V3 satellites....adding around 60 Tbps of Starlink capacity in ONE launch Around 20× the downlink capacity deployed by a Falcon 9 Starlink launch After payload deployment, Ship 41 will perform its deorbit sequence and come back through the atmosphere That means another major test of: • The orbital heat shield • Flap control through reentry • Guidance during the return • Raptor relight • Landing flip and burn Ship 41 will then return for a controlled ocean splashdown And the next step is already lined up....Elon has confirmed Flight 15 is planned for the first attempt to bring Starship all the way back to the tower and catch it But Flight 14 comes first Reach orbit....Deploy real Starlink V3 satellites.....Come back through reentry This is where things start getting very real

SpaceX says they've made several upgrades to Starship's heatshield for test flight 14: The upgrades include additional retention mechanisms added to tiles in areas deemed to be at highest risk of falling off during ascent, addressing recently discovered areas that offer flow paths behind tiles for plasma, and flying multiple areas with a curved tile design that has shown the ability to reduce heating in the gaps between tiles. Lastly, two tiles recovered from Ship 40 are planned to be reflown on Ship 41, marking the first tile reuse for Starship. Looking forward to the launch!
SpaceX has just officially announced that they are targeting Tuesday, September 22nd at 8:15 AM ET for their 14th Starship test flight. The upcoming flight is planned to be the first to send Starship into orbit around Earth, and will also mark the first time SplaceX plans to deploy Starlink V3 satellites into the constellation, delivering a payload that will dramatically expand connectivity speeds and reliability around the world. Starship’s initial orbital mission is expected to fly at an altitude approximately 275 km above Earth and complete approximately six orbits around the planet over the course of a nearly 10-hour flight, with splashdown targeted in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Chile. The booster’s primary test objective on Flight 14 will be executing a successful launch, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn, and landing burn at an offshore landing point in the Gulf of America. There have been several modifications to hardware and software to address issues seen on the previous flight.

Elon just gave a much more practical explanation of the current AI safety problem....and laid out a practical framework for making frontier AI safer OpenAI and Anthropic are the two leading AI companies....and their models are close enough in capability that it’s incredibly difficult for either one to slow down without basically handing the lead to the other Elon also made an important distinction: On balance, Anthropic puts more care into safety than OpenAI....but even people inside Anthropic are publicly worried about what their own models can do So instead of asking one company to voluntarily fall behind, Elon’s solution is much more practical: Have Anthropic run its safety test harness on OpenAI models Have OpenAI test Anthropic Have SpaceXAI test both And bring the leading Chinese AI companies into the same system Everyone tries to break everyone else’s models before release “The odds that you will find issues are dramatically greater” That makes way more sense than asking frontier labs to grade their own homework

Elon’s entire engineering philosophy in one sentence: “Physics is the law, and everything else is a recommendation” "Physics is a harsh judge, and there's no fooling physics. If something's wrong, the rocket's going to explode. It's not going to get to orbit. So it's not like, "Elon, you're amazing," meanwhile the rockets are blowing up. It's hard to say you're really kicking ass here when the rockets are exploding.....that's just not the case Generally, the rockets need to get to orbit, the satellites need to work, the Starlink connection needs to work, or bad things happen. This is sort of a physics situation, and physics is a harsh judge. I say physics is the law, and everything else is a recommendation. I've seen people break the laws made by humans, but I've not seen anyone break the laws made by physics. And rockets are ruled by physics"
